Maintenance management excellence assures ?fast and cool? operations
Vitacress Maintenance management excellence assures 'fast and cool' operations In 2006, the Vitacress factory at Andover was named the Zurich Best Factory of the Year at the annual Best Factory Awards Ceremony - the Oscars for British manufacturers. Only those enterprises with pioneering work practices stand a cat's chance of being a contender at this event. Vitacress not only clinched the top prize, but flattened their rivals in other manufacturing sectors by also scooping up no less than three other prestigious awards - all after an intense competition when every part of the business came under scrutiny. |

The Future is Building
John Armstrong is a man with a mission. With a working life in the management, care and maintenance of buildings as well as their engineering services, he knows a thing or two when it comes to the growing role that buildings play in the world of manufacturing and engineering. He's a man with a passion for seeing businesses in terms of energy and resource efficiency and feeding that information back into the design of current and next generation industrial buildings. For these reasons and more, he's recently been appointed the President of the Chartered Institution of Building Services and Engineers (CIBSE) with his inaugural presidential address making it clear that he sees the role of CIBSE to be a growing and changing one. |

Ensuring CMMS Projects delivered with High Quality, on Budget, on Time
There have been many surveys and studies over the years showing less than impressive statistics on how well IT projects are delivered. Most studies claim that a meagre 5-35% of projects are delivered on time, on budget, and at the level of quality expected. Discussed are a few tips on how to beat the odds, and better manage an IT project such as implementation of a CMMS. |

Seeking out the hotspots - A review of thermal imaging
Thermal imaging or thermography is the most versatile maintenance tool and is becoming more and more accessible. In the hands of a skilled operator it instantly shows anomalies in mechanical, civil and eletrical engineering components. With lower cost cameras becoming widely available and the potential for increased use for energy efficiency surveys, there has never been a more exciting time for thermography. But there are dangers involved in this increased use; untrained and inexperienced operators may shows faults where none exist and miss important problems. The future of thermography is in the wider use and greater understanding of the science and technology behind the technique. |

Using CFD to ease the design pressure for SME pump manufaturers
A changing world With some mobile phones now slimmer than an old 3.5 inch floppy disc and packed with more computing power than desktop PC's of 20 years ago, its now wonder that technology once the preserve of elite tier 1 companies is now cascading down into the world of the Small to Mid Sized Enterprise (SMEs). The areas of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) are perfect examples of this, with a growing number of smaller manufacturing and engineering companies now able to massively benefit from powerful design tools in ways barely imaginable a decade ago. |

My Maintenance - Embracing Change
Prior to joining Monitran I spent some 13 years working in the paper making industry for St Regis, focussing on the manufacturing side of the business. Joining Monitran in the summer of 2006 allowed me to transfer the skills I had gained at St Regis, mainly at their Taplow site, into what is fundamentally a family-owned and run business. |

Some thougts on Maintenance Budgeting
To be successful, any maintenance organisation worthy of the name will function via a number of necessary and inter-related managerial and control systems. In his new book 'Maintenance Systems and Documentation' Tony Kelly identifies those systems, (performance control, work control, documentation, budgeting, costing etc) that are key, showing how each can be mapped and modelled and its function and operating principles explained. As with his other books, the analysis is illustrated throughout by case studies drawn from his wealth of experience, and readers can test their understanding of the lessons to be derived by addressing various review questions. |

Combustion under scrutiny
With energy efficiency and climate change very much in the news, especially because of the recent G8 summit where world leaders were looking to establish sweeping emission reduction targets, every area of combustion use is potentially under scrutiny. It stands to reason that every combustion user, whether in private cars or industrial boilers and burners, could be more efficient if they invested in the latest technology. |

Designing for Energy Efficiency
For a compressed air system to operate efficiently as possible, its design requires a holistic approach and an understanding of how each component within a system performs in relation to the rest. Here is a summary of considerations to minimise energy consumption whether it be an existing system or a new build. |

Take a deep breath ...
If the acronym COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations) make you want to roll your eyes and turn over the page, at least read to the end of the paragraph and then see if you feel the same way. According to the latest official HSE (Health and Safety Executive) statistics, in 2005/6 there were 156,000 breathing or lung related health complaints resulting from work or work environments. Out of a total 2 million people suffering an illness believed to be caused or made worse by their current or past work, 523,000 of these were new cases. How about a different approach? In 2005/6 the number of offences prosecuted by the HSE rose by 23% from1012 to 1320 in 2004/5 . In 2005/6 the percentage of these leading to convictions was 73% with the average being fined ?29,997. |

Training - not an option but an essential foundation on which a thriving and dynamic 21st century
In recent times, headlines in the National press such as "Solving the Skills Crisis", "Record Recruitment Problems in Engineering" and "School Leavers spurn Science and Engineering in favour of 'Softer' Options" have given weight to the growing concern that UK manufacturing is experiencing a severe shortage of the skilled engineers and managers needed for our industries to flourish. |
