Talking Shop
Having spent the festive season in the States opened my eyes to a different way of doing Christmas. Some of it was terrific but some of it was just plain weird. After all, who in their right mind would prefer green bean casserole to pigs in blankets and sage and onion stuffing as an accompaniment to their Christmas dinner? Many of the differences between UK and US culture would still be a mystery to me if it wasn?t for the patience and perseverance of my American wife who lovingly explains (where possible) the reasons behind the differences.

Packaging - Rubbish or simply misunderstood?
Ian Morris is a dedicated career professional yet most of us would mistakenly view the subject of his commitment as rubbish. Ian?s passion is packaging hence his current position of Packaging Training Manager for the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) which now incorporates the Institute of Packaging. His 25 years of comprehensive experience gives him a deep insight into the reality of packaging as well as the many changes that have surrounded this occasionally contentious area. Which is why we should listen when he says that all too often it is our own preconceptions about the role of packaging, as opposed to packaging itself, which should be correctly seen as the true rubbish.

Measuring Success for your CMMS Implementation
The starting point for making a cultural shift away from a reactive, breakdown, firefighting mentality, is formulating a strategy together with Operations. The strategy states vision, mission, values, goals and objectives for achieving a more planned environment. In turn, this should result in greater overall efficiency and effectiveness of the maintenance function. Once a strategy is in place, operating principles and performance measures/targets can be established as described below. These are used as guidelines for defining success for projects such as a CMMS implementation.

How clean is your oil - good enough to eat?
Lubricants are the life-blood of any industrial plant and in the same way that blood analysis can tell us vital information about our body and health, lubrication analysis can give an insight to the operational health of plant equipment. In parallel, in the comparable way that blood needs to be regularly cleansed, so lubricants can also benefit from regular cleaning.

Moving Towards a Total EAM Approach
While the acronym EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) may only recently have risen to ascendancy in the IT/business management pantheon, the underlying concept of managing the physical assets of a business is as old as business itself. From land/farm managers of ancient estates through Victorian railway manufacturers to modern utility companies, the task of maximising the efficiency and value of distributed assets is central to success.

Maintenance & Asset Management Journal - Editorial
It is with no small sense of loss that we have to record the passing, in its quarterly, standalone format at least, of our specialist, subscription Journal, Maintenance and Asset Management. After twenty two years of waving the flag for what we have hoped has been a more thoughtful (but not too analytical) approach to reporting new ideas, techniques and achievements in the activities indicated by its title we have decided that a change in format is called for.

Performance Benchmarking Update: Expectations and Reality
The authors draw on their extensive experience in the benchmarking of significant aspects of the performance of companies ? large and small and world-wide ? to highlight not only the striking differences that they have observed in reliability achievement and in maintenance organisation but also the reasons for the clear relationship between these two factors. They conclude that ?best-of-class companies? share a large number of sound work practices, reliability engineering implementation concepts, and organisational alignments and list what they see to be the most significant of the reliability and maintenance attributes that are shared by such companies.

Improving the reliability of a Coal Fired Power Plant using a SAP - REWOP Interface
In the search for improved performance of the management of its physical assets, a major Canadian-based power generation company sought to exploit the benefits of good reliability and maintenance information practices. Specifically, they wished to increase the value derived from the investment made in their SAP PM (Systems, Applications and Products: Plant Maintenance) system. By interfacing REWOP (Reliability Engineering Workbench Optimiser) with their SAP work order module, maintenance engineers and technicians can now accurately and easily analyse historical data. This, plus the adoption of a common language for potential and functional failures, is leading to greatly improved maintenance, inspection and decision-making techniques. In turn this is resulting in increased reliability, fewer failures and reduced maintenance costs.
