What type of music do you play? Without doubt the most frequently asked question I'm asked when people find out that I'm a singer/songwriter when I'm not writing for Maintenance & Engineering. It's also one of the most frestrating because immediately it reveals the almost inbuilt need we have to categorise and compartmentalise people. |

Fast lead time from CNES saves Lafarge Cement UK 50 per cent of plant production
Whilst conducting an internal maintenance inspection, Lafarge Cement UK found a crack in one of its track rings for the grinding mill tables. The tables hold the mill rollers in place, and act as a vital part in the cement making process. Therefore, a short lead-time was needed to ensure no lost production was incurred, despite it being the Christmas period. |

My Maintenance - Why settle for RCM alone?
As I survey the ubiquitous volumes of maintenance books and journals available today, I am amazed by the large number of supposedly different analytical methodologies that one can choose from when it comes to selecting a suitable tool for Maintenance Strategy Development to apply in any one industrial context. It is true that there are several common themes running through most of the currently available techniques, which should set our minds at ease as maintenance professionals, but it is the differences between these techniques that cause much of the debate and confusion. |

This should be in Cosmo and Vogue
What makes Alice Delahunty special is not that she?s young, articulate, successful ambitious and passionate. It?s what she?s successful in and ambitious and passionate about that causes her to stand out from the prevailing cultural representation of today?s successful businesswoman. Indeed, to see her outside of her hard hat and safety goggles the last thing most people would expect is that Alice is an engineer. With only 5.4% of all UK engineers being women that puts her in fairly rarefied company, but what makes Alice truly unique is that she is the 2007 IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) Young Woman Engineer of the Year. |

Well-documented procedures are an integral part of any maintenance management initiative, especially the implementation of a CMMS. This is because the business case rests with implementation of new processes, not simply upgrading or installing new software. |

Hydraulics knowledge under Pressure
Despite the best attempts of politicians and water companies to educate the masses that leaks are an inevitable and therefore acceptable element of modern life, the reality is that when it comes to hydraulics, leaks are dangerous, costly and potentially lethal. In any closed system such as hydraulics or pneumatics, leaks represent waste and inefficiency, which is why the diverse range of industries that rely on hydraulic power invests heavily in keeping their systems as leak free and efficient as possible. |

Condition Monitoring based on Acoustic Emission
When we talk about machinery condition monitoring, we?re talking about condition in the sense of a machines ability to continue to perform its intended function in an efficient manner. Unfortunately there is no way to directly measure machine condition and so it is necessary to infer it from indirect measurements. For Condition Monitoring (CM) purposes a range of technologies are available, each having its own strengths and weaknesses, and it is usual to consider each of them as a tool in the CM toolkit. |

Getting Lean via Value Driven Maintenance
The typical customers today demand high availability of products that are adjusted to their specific needs with short delivery times and without accepting less quality or higher costs. To be able to compete in these markets and in the global economy many companies are now moving to ?Lean Manufacturing?. But what is ?getting lean? exactly and how does is affect Maintenance, how can Maintenance contribute to it and how to derive the maintenance strategy from it? Many maintenance managers are struggling with those questions in daily practice. Is ?Lean? just a set of well known best practices that are now suddenly tagged and hyped as being ?lean? or are there actually maintenance management methodologies available that really link up with lean thinking? Well, that methodology is available today, it?s Value Driven Maintenance?. |

The Quality of Maintenance
All organisations, whether industrial or commercial, strive to provide a product or service which is in line with customer expectations. The degree to which this objective is achieved is a measure or the ?quality? of the product or service. However, the perception gained of the ?finish? of a product by looking at the outside gloss does nothing to ensure that quality has been added in depth or in reliability during the making of the product. Inspection alone is viewed as inadequate and customers now look for a planned and systematic approach to imparting and measuring that addition of quality, particularly those customers who have taken this line within their own methods of working. |

Maintenance & Asset Management Journal - Editorial
There can be very few in the industrial maintenance fraternity who would not agree that pro-active maintenance of plant, or its dominant sub-set, condition based maintenance, will nearly always turn out to be the economically optimum policy ? an RCM analysis, for example, has a built-in tendency to preferentially direct the planner towards such an approach. |

Predictive Maintenance by Performance Monitoring of Plant
Much is written about the condition monitoring methods of vibration analysis, oil analysis, NDT methods, and electrical plant tests, but very little about performance analysis, i.e. the analysis and monitoring of the physical performance of both rotating and non-rotating plant items as an indicator of their condition. Performance analysis also often enables the optimum time to be found to schedule maintenance to restore lost performance. Based on his many years of experience in fossil fired steam power generation, the author demonstrates ? via case studies on pumps, air compressors, steam turbines, mechanical control system components, boilers and heat exchangers ? the application of this methodology. |

Journal Vol 21, No - A Mobile Maintenance Decision Support System
The development is reported of an e-maintenance system, ie a mobile maintenance decision support system based on web and mobile technologies. The problem of the lack of experts to troubleshoot a fault in a machine is a long-standing one. It has led to the application of artificial intelligence and, later, distributed artificial intelligence for machine condition monitoring and diagnosis. |

Carbon Trading: Leaving minimal footprints in the carbon landscape
You could be forgiven for being confused about Carbon or Emissions Trading ? essentially the open trading of allowances or quotas of emissions. Despite the UK having had a voluntary Emissions Trading scheme in place for 5 years, the press coverage surrounding this both during and after it came to an end in 2006 was largely missing at best, and critical at worst. |

Giving Coal the treatment it deserves
It would be easy to view coal as yesterday?s fuel ? the fuel of the industrial revolution. It remains however the world?s most abundant traditional fuel to generate electricity. In fact 50% of the electricity in the US and 40% globally comes from coal with consumption of coal for power generation expected to rise from 4.8 billion tonnes to 7 billion tonnes by 2030. And there?s enough to last for the next 250 years or more. |

Different ways to get the waste you want
On average, each person in the UK produces 150 litres of wastewater containing 55g of biosolids per day. This is treated by approximately 9000 wastewater treatment centres typically through 3 key stages following appropriate screening. These stages include (1) Settlement, (2) Biological Treatment via a range of possible methods and (3) Tertiary treatments whereby the final discharge destination dictates any so called ?fine tuning? treatments. In addition to treated water, the process generates sludge as a by-product that consists of raw primary and secondary sludge, both of which must be treated before recycling or disposal with the degree of treatment dependent again on the intended final use. |

Too close for comfort
The Chartered Institution of Building Services and Engineers (CIBSE) recommends an ideal relative humidity (RH) of 50% in terms of providing comfort for workers. There is however no current legislation concerning RH levels for work which perhaps reflects the widespread misunderstanding that exists within industry about the importance of RH. |

Getting to Grips with High Level Loading Safety
While the latest HSE figures showing a record low of 45 fatalities for people who fell from a height at work (06/07) are a cause for celebration, there is still much room for improvement. This is all the more apparent when you consider that 3351 people suffered serious injury in the previous year as a result from falling from a height at work. This is despite of much tougher ?Work at Height? legislation introduced in April 2005 which placed more emphasis on a corporate or collective attitude to accident prevention as opposed to individual worker protection. |

Remember that Christmas Packaging?
I don?t know about you but having just had Easter, Christmas seems a lifetime ago. The presents have long stopped being played with and all that Christmas packaging is now thankfully long gone. But gone where? According to the last government statistics in 2002/3 it takes its place as part of the 100 million tonnes of domestic and commercial waste generated every year in the UK. That?s waste destined for recycling or more likely, for disposal in landfill sites with all the environmental consequences we?ve rightly become more concerned about. |

Death and Public Humiliation! Getting tough on H&S
A cartoon in ?Private Eye? magazine a few years ago entitled: ?Director with responsibility for going to jail? will have raised a wry smile on many health and safety manager?s faces. It also illustrated the more serious point that pressure was being brought on organisations to improve health and safety from a variety of sources, not least legal. The latest piece of legislation which has a potential for a substantial effect on the way businesses manage health and safety comes in the shape of the new offence of corporate manslaughter, in force from 6 April 2008. There will be even greater scrutiny of health and safety, meaning organisations need to take careful stock of existing arrangements. |
