In-House or Outsourced?
Last issue we looked at how Phil Wolff and HSS Tool Hire maintains tools and machinery for businesses across the UK. This month we take that one step further and focus on the growing trend of outsourced facilities and maintenance management. Freidman may be a relatively new company but with a growing client list including Coca Cola Enterprises, GE Transportation, Cushman and Wakefield, and GlaxoSmithKline, they clearly are successfully meeting a need. John Ellis, founder and Managing Director, would put this down to the 100+ years of maintenance experience within the company. I?d add that a great deal may also rest on his genuine passion as an engineer for maintenance as a discipline.

If all boilers were this efficient my future wouldn't be adrift
Page 54
Advances in boiler technology
While fuel was relatively cheap and emissions not high on the agenda, purchase price probably was the most important factor to consider. Many boilers therefore were designed to be small in size with the least steel, tube and insulation possible without greatly affecting reliability and output. This resulted in mediocre efficiency, with higher fuel and power consumption and NOx.

Evaporative Cooling
The evaporative cooling element of a ventilation system is simply a wetted filter over which the air flows. As warm air passes over wet filter pads water naturally evaporates into the air. The air is cooled as it gives up the heat required to evaporate the water. This is evaporative cooling or ?adiabatic cooling?.
