Talking Shop
One of my favourite eating places is undergoing some refurbishment work. Framed by the somewhat drastic looking activity going on, a sign on the door read, ?Business as usual?. I know it was meant to reassure but all it actually did was to confirm to me that there was no way business could be as usual given the degree of upheaval all around me. ?How very British? I thought to myself as I walked away and went somewhere else.

Church Access Challenge for Nationwide Access
Nationwide Access has never run away from the ?trickier? jobs ? in fact, they seem to enjoy the challenge! They were tested recently, at a job in the North-East. St. Ignatius?s Church in Hendon, Sunderland is a handsome Grade II listed nineteenth century church in the Early English style. It was presented to the people of Hendon in 1821 as a gift from the Bishop of Durham, and still has a lot of the original features.

Fancy a Boost from the taxman?
It?s not often the taxman gives you money, but if your company carries out innovative work in the manufacturing sector, or has a research and development section, then you could be eligible for tax credits, which could reduce your tax bill or, in certain circumstances, give you a cash payment. Either way, it could help your company fund technological breakthroughs, helping it to grow and prosper and get ahead of the competition.

An Ensuring Passion for Engineering and Manufacturing
While many young boys in the Midlands grew up with childhood heroes including Eagle?s Dan Dare and Formula One racing driver Jim Clark, for David Wright they provided the fuel for his enduring passion for engineering and manufacturing. After studying engineering at Aston and Warwick Universities he spent 14 years at Land Rover before becoming Head of Operations at the Morgan Motor Company. Following a spell in consultancy, he became Chief Executive at the West Midland Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS WM) in November 2002 because of a genuine belief that the service could and would make a difference to manufacturing.

What can go wrong with your CMMS Implementation
To put it simply, the track record is poor for implementing CMMS packages, regardless of size of company, industry, location, number of prior attempts, and so on. With an average failure rate conservatively estimated at 50 percent, no small wonder why management is somewhat apprehensive about yet another attempt at implementing a CMMS.

My Maintenance - Walking the Fine Line
Where maintenance is concerned, site engineers walk a fine line - between performing too little or no maintenance and performing too much. Those that perform too little or no maintenance definitely experience more machinery failures, and in the cases I have witnessed those failures have always had knock-on effects such as line and plant shutdowns. Moreover, the problems (and I will refrain from mentioning anything hitting fans here) always came at the most inopportune moments. In my previous role, work took me away from a Christmas Eve with the kids, a wedding anniversary with the wife and, worst of all, an FA cup final.

Electric Motor Condition Monitoring Efficiency Does Matter
The concept of Predictive Maintenance has become a world wide accepted practice and is being finely tuned in most settings. Locating, defining and acting on potential problems before they become catastrophic is the main objective of a predictive maintenance program. Routine monitoring is not only the most effective method of determining an early diagnosis, but it has many other positive aspects. Often, upon a thorough inspection with state-of-the-art equipment, numerous issues, some minor but most unknown, can be identified and rectified, so avoiding critical downtime and ensuring a more efficient operation.

Maintenance & Asset Management Journal - Editorial
There can be very few in the industrial maintenance fraternity who would not agree that pro-active maintenance of plant, or its dominant sub-set, condition based maintenance, will nearly always turn out to be the economically optimum policy ? an RCM analysis, for example, has a built-in tendency to preferentially direct the planner towards such an approach.

Cogeneration: The Power behind Energy Partnerships
With oil prices at a record high and energy costs in both commercial and residential sectors continuing to increase, the idea of ?something for nothing? when it comes to power generation is understandably very appealing. Notwithstanding the 2nd law of Thermodynamics which essentially states that energy can not be destroyed but can only change form, our human experience leads us to be deeply suspicious of such claims. Be it cars that run on water, or engineering plants that are entirely energy self-sufficient, something within us says it?s too good to be true.

8 Way to Save. Maximising energy savings in compressed air systems
By far the largest proportion of the total lifecycle costs (at least 79% on average) of a standard compressor is taken up by energy consumption, and of the total electricity consumed in the UK for generating compressed air, 30% is thought to be wasted. Here, John Forman of Atlas Copco Compressors, identifies eight ways for compressor users to maximise energy efficiency and avoid energy penalties:

Eye spy
How would you feel if your boss asked you to stick a pin in your eye as a condition of work? If you are the boss, would you ask your workers to stick pins in their eyes? If that?s too extreme, how about rubbing some iron filings in there instead or maybe just some sawdust? While clearly ridiculous, the reality is that according the 2006/7 statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 1694 workers sustained eye injuries serious enough to warrant 3 days or more off work. A further 688 suffered a more severe category of eye injury.
