The Big Picture - Engineering The Future
John Baxter is truly a man of the world. Not only has he spent his life working in a variety of hands-on positions, his love of mechanical engineering has seen him travel extensively. From serving on a Polaris nuclear submarine through to providing leadership for a number of high profile organisations including Powergen, the UK Atomic Energy Authority and most recently as Group Engineering Director for BP, John has extensive experience of the vital role played by mechanical engineers in building the world of today, and tomorrow. A passionate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) since 1975, John became its President in May 2007 where his blog now attracts considerable interest from all over the world. |

Effective Management of Change
Despite the ever-increasing richness in functionality offered, failure rates for implementing CMMS packages remain high at about 50 percent, depending on how you define ?failure?. Even after a company has installed two or three previous CMMS packages, the odds do not seem to improve significantly. |

Effective Fleet Maintenance: Driving Costs Down While Lifting Drivers Up
Chalk and cheese my father and grandfather when it came to cars. Dad almost dared his Hillman Avenger to breakdown so he could undertake another Heath Robinson repair and the Avenger willingly complied. Routine servicing was frowned upon as for wimps while fuel consumption was simply accepted as a fact of life, along with wear and tear. My granddad on the other hand fastidiously logged the mileage of every journey in his Austin Maestro in order to always know his precise fuel consumption. Servicing was as meticulous as the stitching in his driving gloves although even this couldn?t provide complete preventative maintenance for the pale green 1.3L example. Both had one thing in common ? each believed their approach got the best from their car in terms of value, but were either of them right? |

Grundfos robots take the strain
Northern Europe is losing engineering plants because of the cheaper production overheads available elsewhere but Grundfos Pumps in Denmark has bucked this trend by heavily investing in improving their manufacturing facilities through a variety of means ? including the introduction of robots to undertake mundane and repetitive work. This has freed up employees to take on proactive roles and become more process, as opposed to task, orientated and has resulted, over the past 4 years, in a 30% improvement in productivity. |

Infrastructure Management
Different asset management philosophies and models were developed in the 1990s, but the basic approach to their application has been the same in different market sectors. This approach may provide a long-term focus for managing assets. However, it often fails to recognise the crucial relationship between capital investment associated with maintenance on the one hand, and operational maintenance costs on the other. |

Oil Contamination
Sensitive applications such as food, electronics, medicine, etc, have to meet particularly high standards relating to the purity of compressed air and in order to achieve this Beko Instruments has developed Oil Control for supervising the oil content of compressed air. Unlike conventional pressure manometers, Oil Control does not react to the rise in differential pressure, but to the changed remainder oil rates in the streaming compressed air. |

You know how to whistle don't you?
There are three times I distinctly would not want to be a whistle blower. The first would be in the middle of the Atlantic wearing my aircraft issue lifejacket complete with flashlight and whistle ?for attracting attention?. The second would be as a linesman in the England v South Africa rugby world cup final for a penalised England try ?. The third would be if I was working in an organisation where I strongly felt that a fundamental wrong was being done or that there was a disaster waiting to happen but couldn?t get anyone in the company to take notice. |

Controlling ever increasing door costs
The strains on today?s industrial doors are higher than ever due to growing commercial demands and increased traffic on site. Soaring maintenance costs are not solely a result of emergency call outs, routine repairs or impacted doors, but the added cost in terms of expensive down time and loss in production. Far too often costs spiral out of control, especially where demands are high. |
