Not only has he spent his life working in a variety of hands-on positions, his love of mechanical engineering has seen him travel extensively. From serving on a Polaris nuclear submarine through to providing leadership for a number of high profile organisations including Powergen, the UK Atomic Energy Authority and most recently as Group Engineering Director for BP, John has extensive experience of the vital role played by mechanical engineers in building the world of today, and tomorrow. Dad almost dared his Hillman Avenger to breakdown so he could undertake another Heath Robinson repair and the Avenger willingly complied. Routine servicing was frowned upon as for wimps while fuel consumption was simply accepted as a fact of life, along with wear and tear. My granddad on the other hand fastidiously logged the mileage of every journey in his Austin Maestro in order to always know his precise fuel consumption. Servicing was as meticulous as the stitching in his driving gloves although even this couldn?t provide complete preventative maintenance for the pale green 1.3L example. Both had one thing in common ? each believed their approach got the best from their car in terms of value, but were either of them right?
